When I first saw Yo Gabba Gabba! on air, I thought it was weird . But after a few episodes of catching it on Nick Jr. (which you can never avoid if you have a two-year-old), it quickly grew on me (and apparently to a lot of US college students having a trip). Now, it’s my favorite kids’ show (and yes Baby Girl likes it too). Here are my top 5 reasons why:
- The characters. Forget monster Muppets, try red cyclops! I love the cute, weird characters Brobee (the little green one), Toodee, Brobee, Plex, and of course Muno. I still find the human character DJ Lance Rock extremely odd though.
- The music. House, hip-hop, pop, electronica, new wave, chiptunes…c’mon, this is without a doubt the coolest children’s show on earth. Love the guest bands including The Aquabats!. Plus the fun, repetitive, and addictively trippy songs like “There’s a Party in My Tummy,” “It’s Fun to Brush Your Teeth,” “Try It…You’ll Like It,” “I’m So Sorry,” “Clean It Up,” “Sometimes We Win, Sometimes We Lose,” and more. Most important, it makes Baby Girl dance.
- The design. I love the retro video game graphics, the colorful set and characters, the t-shirts that the kids wear, the animation, everything!
- The weirdness. Yes, it’s odd, eclectic, psychedelic, and bizarre. And that’s why I love it. Besides, there’s method to the madness. There are actually a lot of practical lessons for kids (and grown-ups too).
- Super Martian Robot Girl. Nuff said.
