Okay, I admit I haven’t memorized a single lullaby. Not even the violent classic “Rock-a-bye baby.” I kinda trail off after a few lines, like “Rock-a-bye baby on the tree top. When the wind blows, the cradle will rock. Lalala-lala-la, hmm..hmm..lala…rock-a-bye baby cradle and all.”
I can already visualize Simon Cowell snapping: “That’s the worst lullaby I’ve ever heard. You make Sanjaya sound like an angel. It’s like an alien singing. You’re just not good enough for this competition…sorry.” And Ryan Seacrest saying: “America has voted: You are in the Bottom Three” and then later “I’m sorry buddy, you’re going home.”
It’s really all messed up. My obvious favorite, of course, is a lullaby entitled “You’re daddy’s girl.” It goes: “You’re daddy’s girl. You’re daddy’s girl. Lalala-la, you’re daddy’s girl. Hmmm…hmm…hmmm…lalala…hmmm…hmmm… hmmm…lalala (and repeat).” Well, I’m sure there are actual words other than “You’re daddy’s girl” but really, that’s the gist of the song. What else do you wanna know?
Experts say infants don’t care if you’re off-key or singing Top 40 pop music (just keep it wholesome), as long as it takes them to dreamland. But maybe I’ll just stick to humming.
