I know we should limit Baby Girl’s exposure to television. I feel she’s watching a little too much for her age. It’s good though that she’s very selective. Even when it’s on, if she doesn’t like it, she ignores it. Nevertheless, TV as background sound is not good. But there are shows that she really, really likes. Here are her top 5:
1. Mickey Mouse Club House
Mickey is hands-down her all-time favorite character. Thanks to Playhouse Disney, she gets her daily dose of Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, and Pluto. She loves most especially the Hotdog Dance (I mean, who doesn’t?).
2. Sesame Street Beginnings
Well, technically, a video series, not a TV show, Sesame Street Beginnings is the first “smash hit” for Baby Girl, and she still hasn’t gotten tired of the baby version of Elmo, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and Prairie Dawn. And it has certainly proven useful during diaper change. Besides, the songs are very catchy and we’ve often used them when we play with her. Highly recommended.
3. Blues Clues
I had been watching this show when my 6-year-old nephew was still a toddler. Though just re-runs, the show remains innovative with its narrative format. Baby Girl loves Blue. And Steve (later Joe) are probably the coolest guys to this age group.
4. Hi-5
For a bunch of Aussie grown-ups singing, dancing, and prancing around, this show has surprisingly been entertaining for Baby Girl. With Fil-Aussie Kathleen de Leon-Jones on board (though she has since left the group), it has become less foreign. And I must say, the girls are pretty. It’s a great show — baby likes, daddy likes, everyone wins.
5. Barney & Friends
I never thought it would come to this, but Baby Girl has started to like the purple anthropomorphic dinosaur. I still don’t get it.
What I love though personally is Pocoyo. It’s just the cutest (and I think funniest) animated children’s show. Baby Girl sometimes giggles but generally ignores it. Why, oh why?
I also like the Backyardigans for the CGI, though I couldn’t understand what they’re singing about. And this is weird, but I like Danny & Daddy. It’s baby talk but it’s fun. Baby Girl seems to agree.
Well, I just hope it would be a long, long time before she starts to watch Hanna Montana and High School Musical.
